Numbers 6 and 8 St John Street were a pair of semi-detached houses alongside the bakery. We don't know when the two houses were built. The section of the 1840 Tithe Survey shown below on the left shows that there were 2 houses on the plot of land at that time, although the houses were obviously not the same ones which appear in the above photo. However the section of the 1881 map shown below on the right shows from the two houses as they appear in the photo above. The two houses were therefore built at some time between 1840 and 1881.
We know that at the time of the 1840 Tithe Survey the two houses which existed then were owned by Sarah Greenman who occupied one of the houses and the other was occupied by Charles Hopton. We have not found any other documents telling us who owned the properties after this time except for a planning application relating to number 4 St John Street. This shows that number 6 was owned by a Mr Weatherhead in 1898. We suspect this must refer to Ernest Percy Weatherhead who had taken over the drapers shop in the High Street, previously run by his parents, John and Emily. He was living in the shop in the 1901 census. The houses were demolished about 1970 as part of the town's re-development. The houses were replaced by a new section of road linking St John Street to Rock Street. Click here to read more about some of the families who occupied number 6
