We suspect that the house followed the same pattern of ownership as number 11 and number 15. We know from the 1840 Tithe Survey that all three houses were owned by Luke Withers. We know that in the 1920's, all three were owned by Frank Tucker. It would seem likely therefore that when Luke Withers died in 1868, he left number 11 to Luke Cullimore. Luke had been born in 1846, the son of James and Hester Cullimore, who ran The Crispin, a beerhouse also owned by Luke Withers. In 1865 Luke had married Amy Lucy Gregory from Stapleton in Bristol. She was born about 1840. By 1871 they were running 'The Plough' in St Mary Street. They had children: Arthur D aged 5 born in Long Ashton, Mabel E aged 2 born in Downend and Annie M. B. aged 8 months born in Thornbury. By 1881 they had moved to the High Street where Luke was a pig dealer and flour merchant. They had more children: Bessie G aged 9, Wallace J aged 7, Kate Isobel aged 4 and Hector J aged 2. By 1891 Luke had become a farmer although still living in the High Street. Another child, Dora B. aged 7 had been born. Luke died on 28th April 1917. He was living at Sibland Farm at this time. In his last will dated written in 1901 he had given his property in trust for the benefit and use of his wife, Amy Lucy Cullimore and after her death it should be sold by his trustees. Mrs Amy Lucy Cullimore died 21st December 1925. The Trustees were Arthur Daniel Cullimore of 179 Westbourne Grove Bayswater London butcher and Wallace James Cullimore of Exton House, Second Avenue, Hove, Sussex, retired officer of the Merchant Service. We know from the deeds of number 11 that they sold that property in March 1926 to Frank Tucker, a Thornbury builder. We suspect that Frank also acquired number 13 at the same time because from around this date number 13 became the office for the Tucker Brothers building business. Frank Tucker died on 7th August 1937 and put his property into trust for the benefit of his wife Alice. His Trustees were Norman Frank and Ronald George Edward Tucker, builders and Frederick Thomas Sainsbury, house decorator. We understand that the house was next owned by Jack Hodges of Castle Street and then he sold it to Miss Joan Higgins of 13 Pullins Green. Neither of these people lived in the house - they used it to house tenants. Click here to read about the families who occupied the house as tenants This page was last updated: 13/01/2008 |
