The first family we can link to the house is that of Jack Oates and his wife, Elsie May. They occupied the house in the early 1920's. The photograph on the left is of John Oates and his motorbike outside number 1 Crispin Lane. We know from the Infants school register that they had moved to 12 Eastland Avenue by 1929. Click here to read more about this interesting family Harold and Irene Barton - lived in the house now known as 1 Crispin Lane from 1929 to 1934/5. Harold had been born in Baden Hill in 1900. He was the grandson of James Barton, a stone quarry labourer and his wife, Sarah with whom he was living at the time of the 1901 census.
Harold was a farmer who worked for many years for Mr
Chambers at Alveston. Harold married Irene Mary Rugman in Thornbury in
December quarter 1925. Irene was born in 1904 near Hortham.
Harold and Irene first lived in The Square at Alveston before moving to
Grovesend where they had Henry Thomas born 4th May 1926 and Norman Harold
born on 17th September 1929. They then moved to 1 Crispin Lane where
the twins, Brian John and David George were born on 8th April 1931. In about 1933 the family moved again to 5 Upper Bath Road where Hilary Mary born on 5th April 1934, Margaret Irene on 8th February 1936, Gerald born about 1938 and Derek born about 1942. They finally moved to a council house at 34 Bath Road where Stephen was born in 1950. Irene died on 26th July 1978 aged 74 years. Harold died on 4th February 1990 aged 89 years. Of their children, Henry is living with his wife in Stafford Crescent, Hilary and Brian are living in Buckingham Parade and Derek is living in France. Sadly David died in 2010. Tom and Florence White - they occupied the house from about 1935 until it was pulled down in the late 1960's. Click here to read more about the family of Thomas White.
