The house is now a very distinctive house because of the 'rounded end' of the house. The 1840 Tithe Map clearly shows that this part of the house was not built at that time, and was added later as an extension. It is shown in the 1880 OS map. The house was built before 1840. In the Tithe Survey taken in 1840 it was part of Plot 330 which seems to comprise 3 houses and gardens owned by William Rolph and occupied by James Aberhall, Richard Gale and James Williams. We are assuming that James Williams occupied number 9. The 1841 census shows James Williams was an agricultural labourer. He died and was buried on 8th December 1850 aged 78 years. In the distance can be seen the entrance to the Town Market. The photo shows left to right Edith Collins, Ruby Screen and Eliza Collins and children, Jeff Screen and Gwen Collins. Gwen Collins has lived in the house since the time she was born in 1928 and her father and grandfather lived there from before the 1891 census. Thomas Collins was listed as renting out the cottage in the 1887 Rate Book. We know from earlier records, and by looking at its construction, that the row of houses now known as 5 - 9 has been divided in a number of different ways in the past. It is too complicated to try and describe these changes in a simple and meaningful way on the website. This page was last updated: 21/03/2012 |
